NIA Management Engages Former Executive Secretaries to Strengthen Ghana’s National
Identity System
The Management Team of the National Identification Authority (NIA), led by the Executive Secretary, Mr. Wisdom Kwaku Deku, has commenced a series of courtesy visits to former Executive Secretaries of the Authority as part of a strategic initiative to honour their legacy, learn from their experiences, and draw on their invaluable insights to guide the next phase of NIA’s growth.
The first visit was to Professor Ernest Dumor, the founding Executive Secretary of the NIA, whose visionary leadership laid the foundation for Ghana’s National Identity System. The delegation expressed profound gratitude for his pioneering role in establishing the Authority and creating the framework for the robust identity infrastructure Ghana enjoys today. Professor Dumor shared his reflections on the early days of the NIA and offered guidance to support the Authority’s drive to build a more sustainable and future-ready national identity system.
On Wednesday, 24th September 2025, the team also paid a courtesy call on Professor Kenneth
Agyemang Attafuah, who served as Executive Secretary from 2008–2009 and again from 2017– 2024. Prof. Attafuah is credited with spearheading the nationwide registration and issuance of the Smart Biometric Ghana Card to over 17 million Ghanaians, including the pilot and launch of Ghana Card registration for Ghanaians below age 15 and those living abroad, as well as establishing NIA’s Regional and District Offices, achievements that have transformed identity management in Ghana. During the visit, he commended the new leadership for sustaining the momentum of his tenure and offered wise counsel on key priorities, including maintaining a harassment-free workplace, ensuring efficient service delivery, safeguarding the sustainability of the NIA data ecosystem, pursuing cost-saving measures, and advancing legislative reforms to protect the integrity of identity records.
These visits mark the beginning of a nationwide engagement with all former Executive Secretaries. According to Mr. Deku, the initiative reflects NIA’s commitment to celebrating its pioneers while leveraging their experience to strengthen Ghana’s identity landscape. He emphasised that the Wisdom Kwaku Deku led NIA will continue to build on the solid foundations laid by its predecessors to deliver a secure, inclusive, and future-driven national identity system that serves every Ghanaian.
